Key Disciplines

Northwest A&F University is one of the earliest universities in China to carry out grassland science research and education. After long-term development, especially in the past 20 years, the college has formed a complete system of undergraduate, master and doctoral talents training and has a post doctoral station in grassland science, which is a key discipline in Shaanxi Province and the National Forestry Administration. In 2018, the College of Grassland Agriculture was established to further promote discipline development at a new level, aiming to adapt to the new situation, cope with new challenges, and undertake new tasks.

The disciple of grassland science is mainly to study the grass plant、the grassland agricultural system and its components, including pre-plant production, plant production, animal production, and post-biological production. The grassland science theoretical system is featured in the cross-integration of natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, the main part of which is the grassland agricultural theoretical system. The disciple is based on three parts of specialized knowledge, including the biological factor group, non-biological factor group, and social factor group, which integrates botany, zoology, ecology, animal husbandry, soil science, biochemistry, genetics, and so on.

The discipline of grassland science is based in Western China, focusing on the strategic requirements of ecological construction and grassland development, directed at the international frontier of grassland science, for the purpose of cultivating creative talents with broad and solid professional knowledge, experienced with normative academic training, familiar with grassland practice, dedicated to the development of "agriculture, the countryside and farmers", has the spirit of innovation and the all-round moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic grounding, has the basic ability to carry out academic research, and independently engages in grassland work. At the same time, we are committed to cultivating high-level talents who master the latest progress in the discipline of grassland science, are experts in a certain field or direction, have extensive knowledge of natural sciences, and have the ability to independently carry out academic research and teaching, including academic elites, technical leaders and industry management talents. In view of the development strategy of ecological security and herbivorous animal husbandry in western China,

the grassland science discipline has formed four sub-disciplines, which are grass germplasm and stress biology, grassland utilization and ecological restoration, turfgrass science and engineering, and grassland agriculture theory and technology.
